How we handle your information
Privacy Policy
Last updated: July 24, 2026
This Privacy Policy explains how The Well ("The Well," "we," "us," or "our") collects, uses, and shares information when you use the The Well app, the website at wellmatched.app, and related services (together, the "Service"). It works alongside our Terms of Use.
The Well is an intimate, invitation-based introduction service for the Jewish day school community. Much of what you share is personal by nature. We try to collect only what the Service needs, to be clear about how it's used, and to keep the sensitive parts of your profile visible only to the people who need them. By using the Service, you agree to this Policy.
1. Information We Collect
Information you give us
- Account and access. Your email address, and the invitation or vouch that let you in. We sign you in with a one-time code or magic link rather than a stored password.
- Public profile. The information shown to other members as part of introductions — for example, your first name, age, location, photos, and the open-ended answers you write or record.
- Private profile. More sensitive detail you choose to share — for example, your religious observance and how it's evolving, your relationship history at a high level, and what you're looking for in a partner. This section is visible only to matchmakers and to the systems that generate introductions.
- Conversations with Elli. When you build your profile by talking or typing with Elli, we process what you say to draft and update your profile. Fields are saved only after you confirm them.
- Uploaded documents. Documents you (or, with your review, a matchmaker) upload, which we parse into draft profile fields. An original document is stored only if you choose to keep it in your private profile.
- Communications. Messages you send through the Service and anything you send us for support, safety reports, or feedback.
Information collected automatically
- Usage and device data. How you use the Service, app version, device type and operating system, general diagnostics, and crash logs.
- Approximate location. Derived from information you provide or from your device, used to inform introductions and relevant distance. We do not track your precise background location.
- Push and notification tokens. A device token so we can send the notifications you've enabled.
Information from others
- Vouches and invitations. When someone vouches for or invites you, we receive the fact of that connection.
- Matchmakers. A matchmaker who works with you may add notes or documents to your profile, subject to your review where the Service requires it.
- Reports. If another member reports or blocks you, we receive the information needed to act on it.
2. How We Use Information
We use your information to:
- Create and manage your account and verify eligibility;
- Build and update your profile from your conversations with Elli and any documents you upload, always with your confirmation;
- Generate and improve introductions, including by creating mathematical representations ("embeddings") of your profile so the Service can find people who fit;
- Enable matchmakers to propose thoughtful introductions;
- Operate features like chat, staged photo reveal, and Sunday sessions;
- Keep the community safe — reviewing reports, enforcing our Terms, and detecting fraud, impersonation, or abuse;
- Send you service messages and the notifications you've enabled;
- Provide support and respond to your requests; and
- Maintain, secure, debug, and improve the Service.
We do not sell your personal information, and we do not use your private profile to serve you third-party advertising.
3. How Introductions and AI Work
The Well uses artificial intelligence in two main ways: Elli, our conversational guide, helps you build your profile and is always identified as an AI; and matching and document parsing use AI to turn your profile and documents into structured fields and into embeddings used to generate introductions.
To do this, we share the relevant content with trusted third-party AI providers that process it on our behalf under contracts that restrict them to providing the service to us. AI output is a suggestion; you review and confirm what becomes part of your profile.
4. How We Share Information
We share information only as described here:
- With other members, through your public profile and photos as introductions develop. Your private profile is never shown to other members.
- With matchmakers vetted by The Well, who see the profile detail needed to propose introductions.
- With service providers who host, store, secure, analyze, or process data for us — including cloud hosting, database and storage, messaging, and the AI providers described above — under agreements that limit their use of your information.
- For safety and legal reasons, when we believe in good faith that disclosure is needed to comply with the law, enforce our Terms, or protect the rights, safety, or property of members, the public, or The Well.
- In a business transfer, if The Well is involved in a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets, subject to this Policy.
We may also share aggregated or de-identified information that cannot reasonably be used to identify you.
5. Your Choices and Controls
- Edit or delete profile content at any time from within the app.
- Control notifications through the app's settings and your device settings.
- Block and report any member with clean, unilateral controls that do not notify the other person.
- Delete your account from within the app or at wellmatched.app. When you delete your account, we delete or de-identify your personal information, except where we need to keep certain records to comply with the law, resolve disputes, or enforce our agreements, and except for limited copies in routine backups that age out over time. Content you already shared with other members or matchmakers may persist in their records.
- Access or correction. You can ask us for a copy of the personal information we hold about you or ask us to correct it by contacting us at privacy@wellmatched.app.
6. Data Retention
We keep your information for as long as your account is active and as long as we need it for the purposes in this Policy. After you delete your account, we remove or de-identify your information within a reasonable period, other than what we must retain for legal, safety, or dispute-resolution reasons and limited backup copies that expire on a rolling basis.
7. Security
We use administrative, technical, and physical safeguards designed to protect your information — including encrypted transport, access controls, and keeping your private profile separated from what other members can see. No system is perfectly secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security. Keep your email account and device secure, since access to your email can allow access to the Service.
8. Children
The Service is only for adults aged 18 and older. We do not knowingly collect information from anyone under 18. If we learn that we have, we will delete it. If you believe a minor is using the Service, contact us at privacy@wellmatched.app.
9. Your U.S. Privacy Rights
Depending on where you live in the United States, you may have rights to access, correct, or delete your personal information, or to receive a copy of it. We honor these requests as required by applicable law and will not discriminate against you for exercising them. To make a request, contact us at privacy@wellmatched.app. We will verify your identity before responding. Because The Well is offered in the United States and is intended for a U.S. community, this Policy does not address non-U.S. data-protection regimes.
10. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Policy from time to time. If we make material changes, we will notify you through the Service or by email and update the "Last updated" date above. Continuing to use the Service after changes take effect means you accept the updated Policy.
11. Contact
Questions or requests about your privacy can be sent to privacy@wellmatched.app.
